Make this adorable Turkey Door Hanger with a free SVG file…

All of my blogging friends (and some neighbors) are decorating for Christmas, but I had this idea for a turkey door hanger for a while now, and I am so glad I made it because it’s pretty adorable (and also really easy to make)!

I’ve owned a Thunder Bolt Laser for almost a year now, and I’ve made many projects with it. It’s easily become my favorite crafting machine, and I’m constantly amazed by the possibilities and projects I’m able to bring to life.

Be sure to download my Free SVG for this project, although I will let you know I’m not typically a SVG file creator, so it may not be perfect! It will get the job done, though.

In the free file, I’ve included a 1″ square for size reference purposes, and a 18″ round circle as that is the size wood sign I used for this project.

Note: I purchased the 18″ wood sign for this project, as the laser bed on my Bolt is not large enough to cut that size circle. Here is the link for the wood circles with pre-drilled hanging holes I use.

This post contains affiliate links, however, all opinions are my own, as always.

Materials Needed for this Turkey Door Hanger

For this turkey door sign, I used:

  • spray paint (red, orange, black, and white)
  • clear protectant spray (great for helping protect your sign from the elements during the ‘ber’ months!)
  • wood stain for the actual door sign
  • 3mm baltic birch – I recommend sourcing from a local laser wood supplier (I use one in Detroit, Crafty Knights, that delivers fast and has great quality wood)
  • 18″ wood circle
  • glue (this is the glue I use to adhere wood pieces to my signs)
  • 2″ wired ribbon (2 different layers – fall ribbon and mesh burlap ribbon)
  • ribbon making tool (I can only make bows using this tool, I can’t recommend it ENOUGH)
  • hot glue gun
  • laser machine (I own the Thunder Bolt RF 30W Laser)

How To Make Turkey Door Hanger

First, cut out your turkey face pieces. You can use my free SVG down below – be sure to size your pieces to fit your size door sign (this is sized to fit an 18″ door sign).

For my wood and RF laser settings, I used 10 speed, 60% max power, 1% min power. Your settings may be different!

Next, it’s time for staining and painting.

I use an old cardboard box to place my pieces in and spray paint. Do thin, full coats of spray paint to avoid any pooling on the piece edges.

I also do my painting and staining in the garage with the door open. If it’s super cold out, I open the garage door about 2 feet to help air everything out while the pieces are drying.

For staining, we use an old stool to rest the door sign on and wipe the stain with the grain and allow to dry.

Gluing Your Wood Pieces To The Door Hanger

Wait until your pieces are fully dry before gluing. Glue your pieces one at a time – I like to place the eye pieces (white and black) first to ensure everything is properly placed.

Feel free to mess with placement of all pieces before beginning gluing so even the snood (red piece by the beak) hangs where you’d like it.

To successfully adhere with this glue, be sure to do a light coat of glue on the backside of your wood pieces (I do a few swipes of the nozzle tip along the center of the wood piece) and press lightly for several seconds.

How To Make A Perfect Bow For A Door Hanger

I didn’t learn this until this year, but this bow making tool is my new best friend. I have always struggled with being able to make a decent looking bow until I got this, and it’s completely changed the game for me.

Now, all my bows have proud, gorgeous looking bows!

I will be making a video on this process very soon to share with you.

How To Adhere Your Bow To Your Door Hanger

To attach my bow to my door hanger, I used a healthy amount of hot glue.

On other signs, i have used a staple gun to attach my bows, but I didn’t care for the staple on the other side of the sign poking through, or the slight damage that occurs to the sign from the stapling process.

I’ve found that hot glue works best, just be sure to apply some pressure and glue on top/bottom of the inside of where the bow attaches to the sign to account for any wind.

Hanging Your Door Hanger

To hang my door hangers, I like to use coordinating ribbon. For this door sign, I used some of the plaid ribbon I used for my bow, folded it in half 2x and poked it through the hanging holes that are pre-cut for me.

I tired a knot on the backside, ensuring the length of my hanging loop was as long as I wanted it for our door.

We also have a 24/7/365 command hook type door hanger attached to the glass of our door.
