Decluttering Your Home Quickly: 5 Areas That Save You Time

Decluttering your home is a constant process, especially when there’s more than just you in the house.

Through each season of life, a new hobby you try, or school grade your child goes through, your home acquires new items.

It’s necessary to go through your items through each season change and only keep what you really need.

Less clutter means less cleanup, which also means saving yourself some time and sanity.

In this post, I’ll be sharing some of the areas in your home that you can quickly declutter that will save you time…

Organize Under The Sink

Organizing under your bathroom and kitchen sinks can save you a great deal of time.

Once organized, finding your sponges, cleaners, or even mopping up a leak from the sink can be done fast!

My favorite way to declutter this space is to take everything out.

I like to flat-out overwhelm myself with the amount of stuff I see.

This helps motivate me to only put back what we really need!

Because we definitely don’t need all of it, and can’t find things when they’re all shoved together under the sink…

I typically use this time with the space completely cleared out to measure the space I have to work with and implement some organizers that fit.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite organizers, if you need some ideas or inspiration on what to get for under your sink.

You can also stop by your local Dollar Tree and grab some simple baskets and containers for budget-friendly options.

Also, for organizers, I like to try to pick out things that help use up the depth or height of a space, since that is usually the space that isn’t utilized best.

Once your organizers are in place, you can start putting back the things we truly need, grouping them together.

Put like items together as they make sense for your family and uses.

Makeup Drawer

If you have a makeup drawer or container, organize it!

This will help simplify your mornings and clear some space in your bathroom or vanity.

Declutter the extra cosmetics you don’t use or like.

I would start by grouping the makeup items you use every day (grab your favorite eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, lip balm/lipstick, blush, and bronzer).

Put those to the side.

Next, go through the rest of your cosmetics and toss any that fit these categories…

  • have you used it in the last three months?
  • do you ever plan to use it again?
  • are there any unopened cosmetics you don’t plan to use and can donate instead?

Mail Organizer

If you’re like me, you keep a variety of papers in your mail organizer like…

  • bills (paid)
  • bills (unpaid)
  • important house papers (HOA meetings, etc.)
  • school papers and forms

Sorting through and organizing this will only the papers you truly need will help keep you from missing the important ones!

Shred or toss the papers you no longer need and file away the long-term papers you need.

Here’s a great shredder!

You can also use a blackout stamper to protect your mail without a shredder (this is a great option if you don’t want to buy another appliance but still want to block out important information on mail or bills.

Try to keep only the relevant papers in your mail organizer.

I would also recommend a mail organizer with a few slots vs. just one slot.

2-3 slots is best – one slot is not enough, and I’ve found 4+ to be too many.

We have one that hangs on our wall by our front door, much like this one

Home Office

If you work from home full-time or part-time, decluttering your home office is a must!

Depending on the size, this project may take more than just an afternoon.

Start with your immediate work area first (where you create, type, write, etc.) and work outwards from there.

Toss/shred old papers, file important papers in a paper organizer, and keep only what you need day-to-day nearby your workstation.

Fridge

Keeping your fridge organized can be tough when there are multiple sets of hands reaching in and shuffling things around.

It’s easier when you declutter your fridge.

Go through your fridge weekly, tossing any expired food and condiments.

If you want to further organize your fridge, I have a great post for you, along with free printable fridge labels!
